The Dangers of Gas Leaks

Gas leaks, particularly those involving natural gas or propane, are highly dangerous due to the risk of fire and explosion. Common signs of a gas leak include:

  • The Smell of Gas: Gas leaks often produce a distinct odour. If you smell gas, leave your property immediately then call us to arrange to have your system repaired and tested.

  • Hissing Sounds: A gas leak can sometimes produce a hissing or whistling noise near the source.

  • Dead Houseplants: Gas leaks can suffocate plants, causing them to wither and die.

  • Physical Symptoms: Exposure to gas leaks can lead to symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and headaches.

  3. Safe Repairs: Our certified gas fitters conduct repairs safely, addressing the issue and preventing further leaks.

  4. Be aware of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Carbon Monoxide or CO is a highly toxic gas caused by incomplete combustion of your existing gas appliance. Gas flame picture should be a clear variation of blue in colour. If you’re seeing an Orange colour flame this burner could be emitting CO. Causes can vary but normally build up of soot or fat on gas orifices. Unfortunately, CO is odourless and has the nickname “Silent Killer”, due to victims in an unventilated room becoming drowsy then losing consciousness and breathing.

What To Do In Case of A Gas Leak

  1. Evacuate: If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, open windows, doors and ventilate, evacuate your property immediately. Do not use electrical switches, appliances, or open flames. If you can shut of the emergency gas valve from the supply at the meter (Natural Gas) or the LPG bottles (LPG) without endangering yourself then shut the supply off.

  2. Call for Help: If the gas leak is known to be inside the property you can call the gas company or ourselves. If the metered gas leak is outside in the street or footpath (upstream of the meter) this will be high pressure and the property of the gas network supplier (APA). They must be notified by phone urgently as this is a situation considered Immediately Dangerous. Once safely outside, call your gas company and emergency services. If you suspect a gas leak but don’t smell gas, contact a professional for inspection.

  3. Don’t Return Until Cleared: Do not return to your property until it has been cleared by a gas technician or emergency personnel.
